When the Howlers fly back to the States on a two-week furlough with young Hans Rooten, they spend a day in New York City with family members. A call to Reb Ralston in Kentucky alerts Fury to possible danger and when they investigate, they are captured by German spies hunting for the Manhattan Project, which the Nazis believe is nearby. During the Howlers' escape, Dum Dum is shot and seriously wounded, but the others win the fight. The Ralstons offer to take Hans in for the duration of the war and the Howlers are ordered back to Europe on a secret mission, reluctantly leaving Dum Dum behind.
