Gardner develops his peculiar attitude problem, presumably a result of his brain injury at Sinestro's hands in the antimatter universe (Green Lantern (DC, 1976 series) #116 and #123) as the Guardians were slowly healing him to full recovery (behind the scenes revealed this issue).
